I love personality tests

personality test

Ok – I will admit it, I am a personality test junkie! It started in my early IT Training Career when I had the opportunity to do personality development training and I fell in love! I feel like I have taken them all! Myers-Briggs, Jung, Insights, Enneagram, DISC and I could go on! In fact, I was fortunate enough to be accredited to teach the Insights program back in my IT Training days. I loved it – Looking back, this was one of my all time favorite, jobs/roles that I can remember.

In fact, I loved the idea of “understanding yourself and others” so much that while working in IT, I decided to get my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. NO Regrets – I loved every minute of college and considered moving into a masters program. I just felt drawn to counseling and helping people better understand themselves. It just was not the right timing so I didn’t continue with that journey.

Human Design

10 Years later after I finished my degree, I still felt drawn to helping people and ended up for a brief time in Public Education. It was during this time I stumbled onto Human Design. I had once again dusted off the idea of “helping people” but this time after years of experience I decided rather than counseling, I wanted to focus on career coaching so I set out to find a personality test that I could provide to my clients that really provided them insight into themselves. Just as the universe always provides – Human Design dropped into my lap and I knew it was perfect.

Human Design is a wonderful cross between the personality assessments that I loved and Science (which I also love). As a former Science Teacher, I was thrilled that Human Design included elements of genetics and quantum physics. Not to mention it was the most accurate system I had ever worked with before – for the first time I really started to understand myself and how beautifully different I was from everyone else.

Can personality tests help me?

So, lets get back to the question at hand, Are personality tests helpful in selecting the right career? My opinion is that YES they are helpful when looking to start or change a career, but they shouldn’t be the only factor. If I go back through all of those personality tests I have taken over the years they always pointed me to one common theme, I am here to help people.

Since helping people is at my core, I often wondered why public Education went so poorly for me when I loved corporate training and working as a youth leader. In fact as an ENFJ, teaching is one of the highly recommended careers. Fortunately, Human Design was able to provide that missing piece to the puzzle for me to truly understand the environment that would be best for me and the subtle nuances of why public education teaching is not RIGHT for ME.

Even though multiple personality tests recommended teaching as a top career for me, these personality tests don’t look at the other aspects that make us different like Human Design Career overview can do. So even though that the act of teaching is a gift and a strength for me, I do not thrive being in a classroom everyday with the same students. This really changes the parameter of a successful teaching job for me. IN fact, I am at my best teaching 1 on 1 for short periods of time which in essence is exactly what a coach will do, not a classroom teacher.

Understanding those subtle differences that we learn in human design can really give you all of the tools you need in order to create the career of your dreams. Teaching in the classroom might not be the right fit for me, but it doesn’t mean that I don’t love and excel at teaching in the correct format.

The best way to design your perfect career

I invite you to take multiple personality tests and really start looking for that core theme in your life. For me, these tests helped me to recognize my core principles of helping others, being altruistic and living with passion. All of these are important to me and all of them are at the center of my life.

Human Design really helped me understand how I could best utilize these principles to live a life that is in alignment and flow with the universe. And remember, If you don’t have passion for what you do, you will never do it well or love doing it!
